DETROIT — Today, state Rep. LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit) hosted March is Reading Month events at both Mumford and Renaissance High Schools.  Students in attendance joined Rep. Garrett and Detroit author Shawn Blanchard in a discussion of the author’s book and the ongoing importance of reading and learning throughout life.

“It is vital for young people to understand and recognize the importance of recreational reading as a tool to broaden their frame of mind,” said Rep. Garrett.  “I enjoyed having an accomplished author and fellow Detroiter with me to share his experience of overcoming obstacles and shaping his own future. I am confident that his story inspired many of the students to begin thinking about their lives beyond high school.”

Blanchard’s book, “How ‘Bout That For a Crack Baby: Keys to Mentorship and Success” details his journey beyond the poverty, death and loneliness that surrounded him as a young man growing up in Detroit. Despite these beginnings, Blanchard went on to achieve two degrees and numerous recognitions, a process that he shares in his book. Each student that attended the March is Reading Month event received a copy of the book and eagerly engaged in the discussions about these topics. In addition, Rep. Garrett provided each student in attendance with a copy of “A Student’s Guide to the Legislature” to provide additional insight in the importance of public service.
