About Rep. Erika Geiss
State Representative Erika Geiss is in her first term representing the 12th House District, which comprises Romulus, Taylor and part of Van Buren Township.
Geiss is a small-business owner, operating a home-based editing business that she started 2001. She is also a published non-fiction book author and freelance writer, having published several articles on topics such as education, energy and parenting. Geiss is an adjunct faculty member in the humanities at Wayne County Community College District and has also taught at the Art Institute of Michigan-Troy and the University of New Hampshire, Durham. Geiss was also the Director of Education at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University and the Curatorial Liaison for the core, permanent exhibition And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African American History at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History. She earned her bachelor’s degree in developmental psychology from Brandeis University and her master’s degree in art and architectural history from Tufts University.
Geiss has been active in her community, serving on the Master Plan Steering Committee for the City of Taylor and on the Taylor Cultural Arts Commission, of which she was chairwoman for two years. She is also a member of the Wayne County Council for the Arts, History and Humanities, is the current vice president of the PTO at her children’s elementary school. She is also a member of the Downriver chapter of the American Association of University Women.
Geiss is the granddaughter of Panamanian immigrants and spent most of her life on the East Coast before moving to Michigan over a decade ago. She and her husband, Doug, live in Taylor and have two children.
