LANSING – State Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) today announced she will hold a community meeting on Monday, March 2, to discuss concerns regarding the Systematic Recycling composting facility in Delray. The meeting is a partnership between Tlaib and Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SEDV).
"The Systematic Recycling composting facility has been a burden on our community for far too long, and like many of our residents I feel it needs to be shut down," Tlaib said. "Not only is it offensive to the senses, but it is harming our natural resources and endangering our residents. I strongly urge City Council to listen to our community and oppose the renewal of the host agreement with the city of Detroit."
The meeting will take place Monday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Delray Neighborhood House, 420 S. Leigh Street in Detroit.
Since opening in 2006, the composting site has received numerous complaints from residents regarding its odor problems. It has also been cited by Wayne County and state officials for alleged infractions such as taking in too much compost and piling the waste into mounds that are too tall. According to Wayne County Department of the Environment, the mounds burst into flames three times last year.
The site has also been found non-compliant during Wayne County inspections, as well as during others conducted by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
Any residents with questions regarding the event can contact Tlaib toll-free at (877) TLAIB-12 or by e-mail at rashidatlaib@house.mi.gov. They can also visit her Web site at Tlaib.housedems.com.
"This meeting is the time for our residents to speak up and be heard," Tlaib said. "I invite everyone to come to the meeting to share their opinions."
